Creating a blog is the first step in building your online presence. Whether you want to create a blog to share your writing or you’re creating it to build a business, a self-hosted WordPress blog is the best choice. From a simple journal appearance to a full e-commerce platform, a self-hosted WordPress blog provides you with the ultimate in design flexibility.
Three steps to get started:
1. Buy a domain name. I use GoDaddy. When you purchase your domain on GoDaddy, you’ll be offered the option to purchase a privacy plan, buy that. The private registration option will let you hide your name, address, and phone number from public domain registration records. Use this link and you will save up 30% when you register your domain.
2. Purchase a web hosting plan from MediaTemple. Your blog will need to be hosted by a web hosting company. I use MediaTemple because the customer service is outstanding! They have live support people in the U.S. that you can talk to online and on the phone. Use this link and you’ll get two months of free hosting when you sign up.

Putting the whole thing together.
1. Choose a template design for your blog. You can use free templates found on WordPress.org to get started and learn how the software works. After getting the feel of how to make posts and pages you’ll want to purchase a premium template that offers more design flexibility. I recommend the premium themes offered by StudioPress and DIY Themes. In fact, what you’re looking at right now was created on the Genesis theme from StudioPress.
