Scroll through your social media feeds and you’ll see no shortage people, including myself, offering classes on how to earn money online. Many of those advertisements promise to give you “easy to follow” plans for earning lots of money. What they don’t tell you is that the plans might be easy to follow, but actually following through on the plans is hard work that requires time and dedication. That’s why I’m a fan of Sean Whalen’s mantra of “success by hitting singles.”
Showing up and doing the little tasks every day is what builds a successful online business. Yes, there are some ways to automate some little tasks, but they still have to be done. And some tasks can’t be automated at all. For example, you cannot automate the process of developing ideas for new blog posts. Spend 15 minutes every day making a list of blog post topics for 21 days in a row and you’ll find that you have enough ideas to last you for most of the year. (Before you argue about how hard it is to find 15 quiet minutes think about all the time you wasted watching stupid YouTube videos or mindless television last week).
Bottom line: making plans is easy. Following through on plans is hard. Do the little tasks every day to follow through on the plans. That’s the difference between making a living through a blog and wishing that you could make money through a blog.
